The medieval castle of Lewes sits as the center point and jewel of the town. Built shortly after the Norman conquest of 1066 by William de Warenne, 1st Earl of Surrey, it was added to over the years to include the Barbican and towers that are seen today.
In 1850 the Sussex Archaeological Society bought the castle for the princely sum of 30 Pounds. 75 years later, in 1922, the freehold of Lewes Castle was purchased by Charles Thomas-Stanford and gifted back to the society.
